A horror own goal from Kevin Malget was enough to provide an experimental Northern Ireland side a 1-0 victory over Luxembourg.
As both sides seemed to challenges to come on Monday, malget strangely headed into his own net eight minutes to settle on a game.
That is really a Euro 2020 qualifier from Germany, as he sprung a few surprises at a beginning line-up, a game which loomed big in Michael O’Neill’s thinking.
Cardiff defender Ciaron Brown – called into Ian Baraclough’s U21s squad last week and only uncapped at any level – initiated and looked guaranteed as O’Neill made eight changes to the side that beat Belarus in June.
Corry Evans, captain for the nighttime, survived, Together with goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Josh Magennis, however Jonny Evans, Craig Cathcart and Conor Washington did not make the matchday squad.
Rather, Ethan Galbraith, Alfie McCalmont and the Bobby Burns took their places one of the replacements.
O’Neill’s side would not manage a shot however they’d take the lead thanks to Malget’s own objective before the break.
George Saville headed the ball back in the mixture after Luxembourg didn’t take care of a corner. Even though Tom Flanagan is beaten by goalkeeper Moris it span up before Malget headed into his own goal.
Luxembourg were stronger to start the second halfof together with Vincent Thill and Leandro Martins getting the shots but tested Peacock-Farrell.
Liam Donnelly – that has scored eight goals in eight to Motherwell to start the year – arrived in the second half to his cap and got his first goal after.
Northern Ireland currently host Germany at European Qualifiers Group C, live on Sky Sports Main Event on Monday at 7.45pm.
